When two people stop understanding each other

Most couples do not arrive because something dramatic happened. They arrive because the same argument keeps repeating, because conversations have become careful, or because the silence has grown longer than it used to be. None of that means the relationship is over. It usually means the two of you have run out of ways to say what you actually mean.

Counselling for bilingual and international couples

Munich is full of couples who do not share a first language. One partner is Greek, the other German. Both are expats and English is the common ground. It works for everyday life, and then an argument comes and the words are suddenly not there — the ones that carry the feeling, not just the meaning.

I work in English, German and Greek. In practice that means each of you can say the difficult thing in the language you actually feel it in, and I will follow both of you. For couples who have spent years translating themselves to each other, that alone changes the conversation.

What we work on

How the sessions work

We usually begin with both of you together, so I hear the situation from both sides rather than one. Sessions are 60 minutes, normally every week or two at the start.

My job is not to decide who is right. It is to slow the conversation down enough that you can both be heard, and to give you something concrete to take home — a way of raising a subject, a way of pausing before it escalates. Many couples say the first real change happens not in the room but in the week that follows.

Available now, in person or online

You will not wait months to start. Many practices in Munich have waiting lists of three months or more; I can usually offer a first appointment within days.

Sessions take place in Munich or by secure video. Online works well for couples with different schedules, and for partners who are not in the same city — including couples where one of you is in Greece.

Common questions

Is this couples therapy (Paartherapie)?

No. I offer psychological counselling for couples, outside the scope of medical treatment (Heilkunde). It is not psychotherapy under the German Psychotherapists Act and does not replace medical or psychiatric treatment. For many couples, counselling is exactly what is needed — and in the free call I will say honestly if I think you need something else.

Can we come if we speak different languages?

Yes, and it is one of the reasons people come to me. I work in English, German and Greek, so each partner can speak in the language they feel most themselves in. You do not have to agree on one language for the session.

Does one of us have to come alone first?

Not usually. I prefer to start with both of you, so neither feels the story was told without them. If one partner wants a short individual conversation first, that can be arranged.

What if only one of us wants to come?

That happens often, and it is still worth starting. Work with one partner can change a dynamic. Where it helps, I will suggest bringing the other in later.

How long is the waiting time?

In most cases a first appointment is possible within a few days. There is no months-long waiting list.

How much does it cost?

Couples sessions are 60 minutes and are paid privately; statutory health insurance does not reimburse counselling. Current fees are on the fees page, and the first 15-minute call is free.
